A project for "Rebuild Green 2030" (https://rebuildgreen.space/) - International program for Ukraine's green Recovery // New European Bauhaus
Seven teams. Seven Ukrainian communities. Weeks of collaboration brought into focus.
We are delighted that our project was selected as one of the three finalists!
The Hackathon winner and the final TOP 3 ranking will be officially announced on 12 November at ReBuild Ukraine 2026 in Warsaw.
On 31 October, international multidisciplinary teams presented the solutions they have developed with Boyarka, Zhytomyr, Tereshky, Bucha, Lviv, Helendzhyk and Konotop — turning local recovery challenges into proposals for lasting change.
Our team (lead: Gabriele Sturm/ A and Ihor Koziianchuk/ UA; team members: transparadiso, Christine Hohenbüchler/ TU Wien + team members from the Ukraine) presented the project "An Ecosystem for Veterans Reintegration in Helendzhyk"- for a village 70 km from the front line.
Brief by the municipality: "Mykhailo-Lukashivska Community proposes a veteran reintegration pilot on a real land plot in Helendzhyk village. The working concept, the Epicentre of Regeneration, is intended for veterans after severe combat injuries, amputations or psychological trauma, together with their families. The municipality does not propose a closed rehabilitation institution. It seeks a lived environment where accessible housing, nature, qualified support, learning, voluntary livelihood opportunities and community participation support dignity and independence."
In close collaboration with the municipality the team developed an integrative concept for reintegration and therapy, and a future perspective for new village life, based on a development plan for the village (since only 15 residents of the former 200 remained), establishing shelters, connecting new housing, a veterans center based on a pavilion structure in a therapy park, to planting and harvesting herbs and medicinal plants, and producing goods for earning an income, as well as offering spaces for vocational training and workshops. The whole concept is based on trauma-informed spaces and connects to existing structures like the apiary, and the ethno-village, which was a tourist attraction.
