Social Spaces Between Direct Urbanism and Architecture
In 2019, transparadiso won the architecture competition for Wimhölzel Hinterland as result of a cooperative planning process. Based on their master plan, 407 apartments for the social housing company GWG Linz, a supermarket, assisted living facilities embedded in a multi-faceted landscape space as public space are being built in 4 phases. The special feature of Wimhölzel is its significant social structure, which is grounded in a historically grown settlement. Transparadiso considers this as a possibility to engage with the people living there. This also corresponds to another aspect of transparadiso’s urbanistic practice, which they call “direct urbanism”, for realizing - oftentimes participatory - artistic-urbanistic interventions in urban space.

As a transdisciplinary collective founded by Barbara Holub and Paul Rajakovics in 1999, transparadiso realizes projects between art, architecture and urbanism. In addition, transparadiso researches, teaches and publishes in these fields and develops artistic strategies for "direct urbanism" as socially engaged, process-oriented urban planning.
